A 1994 American Council of Education Study found that there are 6,458 higher learning institutions in the US. Of those, 29% are 4-year private schools, 27% are less than two year schools, 18% are two year public schools, 16% are two year private schools and 10% are four year public schools.

AV can enhance learning in a variety of ways. Online tutorials and exercises give students needed practice and continual support. Information can be accessed by students as often as needed. Courses can also include automated assessment and instant feedback, allowing for repetitive exercises that are known to enhance learning. Online classes can be structured to facilitate more discussion in forums than is possible in a crowded classroom or lecture hall. On-demand support is available, allowing students to easily receive instant assistance from a variety of people.
