At 44, Lupe Ortiz has already been working in the AV industry for 22 years. Recently, he became the 5,000th person to earn a Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) qualification.
“Five thousand is significant for us,” comments Randal Lemke, Ph.D., Executive Director of InfoComm International. “When I came here [10 years ago] as Vice President of Education, we had 50 people certified,” Lemke recalls.
CTS is designed for AV pros who have developed a keen understanding of audio, video, display, and systems installation and integration. The exam is offered via InfoComm’s education program and is recognized by the National Certification Commission. Lemke calls CTS certification an industry standard, noting that it can open new avenues in one’s career.
For Ortiz, CTS certification was pertinent to his line of business. As Senior Show Coordinator for Dallas-based AVW-Telav, Ortiz wants to grow with his company. “Now that I’ve taken the courses and passed the test, I understand the need for this certification. It’s not just about gaining knowledge in audio/video equipment, but also in sales, installation and other technologies,” he comments.
The CTS exam is comprised of 100 questions—80 of which must be answered correctly to pass. The test can be taken online, and a 90-day prep course is offered online as well, through InfoComm International. At InfoComm 06, 43 AV professionals took the certification prep class and passed the exam.
AVW-Telav offers an extensive CTS training program as incentive to its employees, as do most companies, according to Ortiz. To prepare, InfoComm offers optional training courses online as well as a three-day prep course and in-person exam for those who don’t want to study and take the test virtually. Finally, to honor Ortiz and the thousands of other CTS recipients, a CTS reception was held yesterday afternoon.
Ortiz is flattered to be the 5,000th CTS recipient. “I’ve been working on InfoComm with Richie Winkler for the past few years, and I definitely feel more involved with the association, as well as more qualified,” Ortiz remarks.
